Cliff Richard - Love… The Album

A whole case of deja-vu

Cliff has become rather like your aged aunt whose Christmas card always arrives first, usually displaying acceptable taste, but also indicative of someone with a tad too much time on their hands. The warm glow of Love…’s candles-and-wine sleeve extends into the 15-track collection that features 10 carefully chosen old Cliff tracks and only five new songs, all of which are covers of others’ hits. Of these nothing much of note is added to Leo Sayer’s When I Need You or Air Supply’s All Out Of Love, though When You Say Nothing At All is a fine re-interpretation of the Ronan Keating hit. The opener, Foreigner’s Waiting For A Girl Like You, is full and contemporary-sounding, but then gives way to It’s All In The Game from 1963. While the 45-year spread of recordings gels better than you’d imagine, and Cliff’s voice and interpretations are as classy as you would expect, the new songs don’t really come close to songs such as Miss You Nights, which remains one of his finest ever. Acceptable fare for someone who hasn’t got a Cliff collection, but a perhaps a little tough on hardcore fans.
