ELO - Ticket To The Moon

Second volume of greatest hits

Twenty Jeff Lynne-and-co corkers, albeit less well-known than the likes of Mr Blue Sky etc. While there are one or two lesser make-weights (the chorale Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind), and latter-day material has a heavy Wilburys feel about it, there’s much to admire. Twilight kicks things off in inimitably upbeat fashion, all techno-rock syndrums and synths, ultra-sweet lead vocals and harmonies, slick strings and the whole production shebang. The same goes for standouts such as Do Ya, the Supertramp-like It’s Over, which is angelically melancholic, and the sweeping title track. Heaven Only Knows smacks of period pop of the very best sort, such as Abba, while El Dorado contrasts with its Hawaiian guitar sound and Ian Hunter-like rasp. Last Train To London has a disco bass beat, Destination Unknown adds reggae to the mix, and Surrender closes in dreamy harpsichord fashion. And relax…
