Nick Drake - Fruit Tree

80s box set gets perplexing overhaul

Nick Drake remains a collecting phenomenon. His original LPs continue to rise in value, yet no one ever shelled out big for Fruit Tree in any form. The five stars here are for the music. Still no one has come close to matching Drake’s majesty and, as time rolls on and his reputation swells, it’s ever more tragic that he never saw success in his lifetime. If you could separate the music from a label’s lust for cash this would get no stars. Thankfully, despite the unheralded reissue, there is an incentive. A Skin Too Few, the 2000 flick with pretty much unrivalled access to Drake’s empire, is included on DVD for the first time. It’s still an absolute joy. Sensitively shot by Dutch filmmaker Jeroen Berkvens, it tells the story not through oft-heard facts, but a homely, deeply personal version of events, helped by family footage of Nick on the beach as a baby, and a neat reconstruction of his bedroom. Better still, Robert Kirby and John Wood strip back the layers of tracks in the studio, and it’s spine-tingling. Hard to imagine who might still be untouched by Drake, but if you are, just buy this. It’s really all the redemption you’ll ever need.
