Nanci Griffith

View: front stalls, stage left

A less than capacity audience listened to a concert that was more interesting and remarkable for everything surrounding the performance than the delivery of the songs. Nanci tried to ingratiate herself through repeated references to Eastenders, but they fell embarrassingly flat. Calls to oppose the war in Iraq, and lengthy eulogies to Texan politicians moved into a parallel universe. Berating us for the use of “cellphones” was also on the list. Four unsmiling, supporting musicians performed pleasant enough renditions of familiar material, but few warmed to her tonight.
