Genesis: Chapter & Verse
by Genesis
I know what I like (on your coffee table)
After the thorough gentleman amateur’s devotion of Genesis Revisited, this large-format book (surely now a part of any major act’s marketing plan) is a fantastic souvenir to commemorate the group’s 40th anniversary. Genesis must have the greatest survival rate of all 70s survivors, having all original members still alive. To have every voice that has ever been in the band captured is remarkable, with departing members, big and small, being afforded a double-page spread each to catalogue what happened next. The hardcore may not glean a phenomenal amount, but anyone who has enjoyed more than a passing acquaintance with the band will be delighted. The pictures and the production values are breathtaking. From items as major as writing Supper’s Ready to Peter Gabriel’s departure and the loss of direction with …And Then There Were Three…, to detail as glorious as Bill Bruford being uppity to Ray Wilson’s insecurities, it’s all here. Full of witty, pithy quotes such as Gabriel’s comments on his first night at Charterhouse (“The air was full of sounds of boys either crying or masturbating, or both. It was welcome to ‘grown-up school’”), this is essential.
