Various Artists - Hands Off! The 1950-1956 Modern Recordings of Dolly Cooper, Zola Taylor, Helen Humes, Donna Hightower & Linda Peters
Wide-ranging stylings from the birth of rock’n’roll
The West Coast Modern and RPM labels were at the forefront of that area’s developing R&B/R&R scene, and this neat compilation gives a flavour of their various femme acts. Donna Hightower’s gutsy and confident delivery provides the first nine tracks, including the fast rocking title track from 1955, and a great previously unreleased Cool Daddy Cool. By contrast, Helen Humes’s voice is girlishly sultry as she oozes through Laziest Girl In Town, the bluesy I Ain’t In The Mood and three others. Dolly Cooper’s six tracks include the fast swinging My Man and doo woppish Teenage Prayer, while Linda Peters has a slinky and sexy voice on One More Chance and You Won’t Trouble Me No More, but is let down with poorer material on her other three tracks. The collection closes with two from Zola Taylor as a 16-year-old before she joined The Platters, with both Make Love To Me and Oh My Dear showing poise beyond her years. A strong compilation, well executed and annotated.
