From Cologne with love, small label hits its half century

Cologne’s Kompakt operation is the lifeblood of Germany’s electronic scene, distributing and nurturing small labels like the family-run Boxer who, over seven years, have unleashed an impressive array of producers into the world. The cream are represented on two CDs, which celebrate its 50th release, mixed together on one by leading DJ Frank Martiniq, while the second sports remixes they’ve received over the years from names such as MANDY, Elnmusik, Gui Baratto, Patrick Chardronnet and Robag Wruhme, tackling Martiniq’s own Boost in spectacular fashion. The mighty Michael Mayer also adds magic to the DJ’s Adriano, the tune that started it all. The Boxer sound is ostensibly deep, minimal and pulsing, but shot with character and soul, which explains why Boxer, and its attendant also-represented sub-labels Boxersport and Kickboxer, are so respected. Martiniq’s mix features a gamut of mesmerising sparklers, including Strom Abwarts’ mix of Wessling & Scrom’s ethereally acidic Donawaullen, Dusty Kid’s Kore and Martin Eyerer & Toni Rios’ melodically bubbling Chorizo. Ekkohaus’ Down With The Boyz shows how the ghost of Giorgio Moroder is never far away, but, overall, this complex, heartfelt music is woven with a warmth and emotion sometimes lacking in this genre, which elevates it into something quite wonderful.
