Johnny Tillotson - She Understands Me/That’s My Style
Onetime student star’s mid-60s MGM output
Johnny Tillotson had survived past his early hits aided by steady production values and a good choice of material. She Understands Me (1964) and That’s My Style (1965) play it pretty safe, sticking close to the formula from the earlier years. Vocal backing from The Jordanaires and The Anita Kerr Singers acts as an effective brake for any thoughts of progress, though The Race Is On ends the set in nifty style. 1965’s Sings broadly maintains the predictable pop-country approach, although with more adventurous arrangements in some places.
