Ray Dorset - Gonna Bop ’Til I Drop

Mungo leader

With a basic pulse hinged on a pot pourri of home-made percussion devices, the raggedly carefree joie de vivre that Mungo Jerry worked up in metropolitan boozers proved just as effective in the charts. Dorset retaining the brand name with his solo collection containing many rare and hitherto-unissued items, including some from pre-Mungo outfits The Tramps and The Good Earth. Dorset goes for the mainstream jugular while taking steps forward in emotive subtlety. He also undertook a host of parallel ventures. The extremes of which, all from the mid-80s, are a blues-boogie exercise with Peter Green and a demo of Ha-Ha This-A-Way, the irritating theme to children’s TV show Wizbit. He redeems himself with Prospects, commissioned for a prime-time drama series, and sung in a voice darker and bereft of all former ingenuousness.
