The Bee Gees - Greatest

Whether you’re a mother or whether you’re a lover…

When this album was first released in all its triple-gatefold embossed sleeve glory in 1979, it marked the end of the Bee Gees’ imperial phase, where they had reinvented themselves as suave soul barons and unwittingly became figureheads for the disco movement. Aside from the association with the ill-fated Sgt Pepper project, everything they attempted seemed to turn to platinum. Although at the time it seemed light years removed from their baroque pop of the late 60s, it could almost be exactly the same thing: there’s a fabulous attention to detail with hooks and choruses to die for. For Jive Talkin’, How Deep Is Your Love and Stayin’ Alive alone, their place behind pop’s velvet rope is assured. Add in the sleek AOR of Nights On Broadway and Fanny (Be Tender With My Love), and there’s a fabulous snapshot of their work during a much-maligned time. The addition of outtake Warm Ride and original 12” promo of Stayin’ Alive completes the picture. Four remixes by people you’ve never heard of draws a moustache on it.
