Luton’s UK Decay were what you’d probably call an archetypal third/ fourth wave British punk band: noisy, passionate, and prone to bouts of proselytising. Perhaps the most remarkable thing that came from the break-up of that band, in 1982, was the formation of Decay’s Eddie Branch and Steve Harle’s new project Furyo.
In contrast to their previous band, the mini-LP and EP presented here (from 1983 and 1984, respectively) showcase a group whose love for spacey, proggy explorations is excellently counterpointed by the galloping rhythms of drummer Harle. They even pull off the Cardiacs-ish pseudo-medieval stuff on the silly, excellently epic King Of Hearts. It’s more suite than song, and about as far away from three chords and the truth as you could get. At the time this band didn’t register much of a splash (their album was destined to remain unissued) and there’s no reason to think that this oddity will do anything to change that. A shame, because it’s good.
