HUMPH TRUMPS ELVIS
Going through my collection of old music papers I came across this NME from May 6, 1956 (left). I think it represents the very first front-cover appearance of Elvis Presley in any publication in the UK.
Interesting to note that Elvis only made it onto the cover as a paid-for advert, while the main headline honour goes to Ted Heath’s jazz band, slightly undermining the notion that rock and roll blew everything else away the moment it arrived!
Nice also to note the ad for Humphrey Lyttelton – amazing that he is still be going strong 51 years later, not least on I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, with Samantha sitting on his right hand.
