SPECTOR v MEEK, CONTINUED
How can you compare what Spector and Joe achieved (Letters, RC 334 and 335)? Well, Joe showed up and coming bands that you could produce different sounds or effects without requiring a chasm of money and weeks or months to produce it! Would the Kinks have stuck knitting needles through a speaker to obtain a sound by listening to the Wall Of Noise – oh sorry, I mean Sound? I don’t think so. Spector had the same sound or formula on every recording, just like Hendrix made a career out of feedback (oh heck, that could have hit a nerve with Jimi’s fans). So yeah, Mr Wadham from Chiswick, you are right, you can’t compare Joe to Phil.
The pictures of bands and labels in Joe Meek Pt 2: The Freakbeat Years (RC 334) were courtesy of Mark Newson and the excellent Joe Meek fanzine, Thunderbolt.
