ELTON AND THE WARLOCK ACETATE
I enjoyed your article on the making of the Nick Drake album Fives Leaves Left in the January RC. I wanted to correct an error regarding the Warlock acetate on which the, at the time, unknown Elton John covered Nick Drake songs, and which is becoming yet another addition to the rapidly expanding Nick Drake myth. You state that when Elton sold his huge record collection, he kept back a fully-signed copy of The Beatles’ White Album and the Warlock acetate. Alas, as touching as this sounds, Elton is on record as saying that this is incorrect. In Trevor Dann’s Nick Drake book, Darker Than The Darkest Sea, page 147, following the sale of his records for the AIDS Foundation, Elton says he does not have the acetate: “Sadly not true, I regret it now. It’s been great to hear them again”.
