ACCEPTABLE BOOTLEGS?
The feature about the unfortunate sale of Mike Read’s collection (I don’t have a collection anything like on that scale, but I do enjoy my collection and I would hate to have to get rid of mine under such circumstances) brought up an interesting point about the legality of bootlegs. As the Beatles lots featured “stacks of bootleg vinyl” we have to ask when is it OK to sell records for which copyright had not been paid to the artists and composers? Apparently it is alright as long as it is in a reputable auction house (as opposed to ‘under the counter’ or dodgy market stands). Perhaps the negligible effect of these items on the actual sales of artists of The Beatles’ stature is being approached in a more sensible, measured manner compared to that of the illegal download scenario of the modern age. I hope Mike Read has been able to resolve his financial issues and can start to enjoy collecting records again soon.
