BITTERSWEET MEMORIES
Bill Voccia’s AC/DC rarities article(RC364) was great fun but has left me wishing I had held on to my own collection a bit longer. The only item I had not actually seen was the New Zealand pressing of Can I Sit Next to You Girl, though I do have the ‘copy-master’ tape that it probably came from! I used to correspond with a dealer/collector in New Zealand and he told me the one and only pressing plant was closing because it had become uneconomical (in the late 80s, if my memory serves me correctly), and everything was being thrown out. Fortunately for me, he had managed to get hold of a few tapes, one of which was the AC/ DC single.
I have never offered it for sale, having never been sure of the legality of such a transaction. However, I would be very interested to know your opinion, assuming it has any real value to a collector. The tape itself is in an Ampex box and reads ‘15ips Copy Master, Stereo Dolby A’. There is also another label on the rear, which names the two tracks and lists running times etc. Keep up the excellent work, I have been a reader since issue one - yes, I’m that old!
An authentic master tape like this would likely fetch in the range of anywhere between $2,000 - $4000 on auction (USD). Bill Voccia.
