SHRINE TO RAYNOMA
With reference to Robert Gallagher’s comments (Letters, RC 362), Raynoma Gordy not only merits her place in Motown’s history, she went on to set up the legendary Shrine record label in New York with Eddie Singleton. This, as many collectors of vinyl associated with the Northern Soul scene will acknowledge, is singularly the holy grail of iconic record labels, despite the fact that the ill-fated producers never attained a Billboard position of note. A perfect breeding ground then, for the purveyors of, and the dancers to, quality soul music with that essential four-on-the-floors ingredient. Raynoma Gordy is a name not easily erased from the minds of true soul lovers, even if Berry Gordy did his best. So, “carve her name with pride”.
