SATANIC REQUEST
OK I realize this issue isn’t quite on the same level of international urgency as global warming, the Iraq war and Britney Spears’ haircut. But after reading your Sgt Pepper 40th anniversary article, I’m afraid I have to finally speak out. It is baffling that the myth about the Stones’ Satanic Majesties Request album (above) is allowed to perpetuate. Your writer called it ‘lacklustre’ while other writers over the years call it ‘ill-advised’ and even worse. Bollocks! Satanic is one of the most psychedelic, engaging, fun and excellent albums ever made, right up there with S F Sorrow, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and Sgt Pepper. As much as I love Pepper, the mind blowing classics She’s a Rainbow, Two Thousand Light Years from Home, Citadel, In Another Land and Gomper beat the pants off of lacklustre pieces like She’s Leaving Home, Fixing a Hole or Lovely Rita. Satanic ranks right up there with Bleed, Banquet and Exile in terms of quality and brilliance.
I propose that RC do something to stop this gross injustice and start the stone rolling in the reverse, correct direction? How about a 40th year Satanic Majesties tribute with editorial testimonial by fans who know the real truth, believers such as Andy Partridge for example. This year please. Or before the North Pole melts.
