MORE WALKING IN MEMPHIS
I read with interest your article on the Memphis scene (RC352). Since I live in the Memphis suburbs, here’s a few additions. As far as record collecting goes, Shangri-La is great, but you missed Goner Records (www.goner-records.com), which is in the same league. Goner is located at 2152 Young Avenue, in the Cooper-Young section of Memphis, which is a decent area of the city. As for live music, Beale Street is pretty much tourist theme bars, but check out The New Daisy Theatre (www.newdaisy.com). The best two clubs in town are the Hi Tone Café (www.hitonememphis.com) and The Young Avenue Deli (www.youngavenuedeli. com). Both have very good food as a bonus to live music. Personally, I think the Hi Tone has the best pizza in Memphis, by far. Speaking of food, the most famous downtown BBQ joint is Rendezvous (www.hogsfly.com), located in an alley close to the Peabody Hotel. My personal preference is the The Commissary (www.commissarybbq.com), located in the Memphis suburb of Germantown.
If you want some personal insight, spend some money at Stand Out Records off Portobello Road and Bill Allerton might be persuaded to give you some!
