ROOTING FOR WELLER’S FELLAS
The Roots Of Weller article in August’s RC was exceptional. I am a collector myself and could only ever dream of owning the rarities you described. My prized possessions are of a copy of the Boy About Town/Pop Art Poem acetate (I had to save up the coupons from the now long gone magazine Flexipop) and I have a copy of Going Underground’ signed by all the band. Here‘s the main reason why I felt the need to write in. I quote ‘It’s all a far cry from his erstwhile colleagues Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler, who are currently regurgitating his early songbook as From The Jam’. Every time I read an article about Weller someone usually Has a dig at Bruce and Rick. There were three members in the Jam. Yes, Weller was way ahead on the songwriting skills, but without Bruce and Rick’s musical style the band would never have been half as good. Have you seen From The Jam? If you take it for what it is, it’s a good night out; they are very professional and I had a lot of fun seeing them. So don’t mock.
Fans that are true to The Jam realise it was not all about Weller and lets face it, has Weller equaled the brilliance of All Mod Cons and Sound Affects since? He came close with Stanley Road, but not close enough. Weller is a top bloke, there is no disputing that, but please, lets all start showing a little more respect for Bruce and Rick.
