FURY CROSS THE MERSEY

I loved Lieselotte Hein’s Elvis week review in this month’s issue (RC 343, p 124) so much that we’ve decided to go to Memphis next year. Though I can’t understand why it was such a small piece when The Beatles Week review was a big feature article last month. Elvis Presley’s thirtieth anniversary was much more important. If it wasn’t for the king then there wouldn’t be anyone in your magazine. He changed music. My partner, who’s from Liverpool, wanted to take me and the kids to up there to Beatles Week to show us the European capital of culture. Your Beatles Week review was nothing like it was. The Penny Lane festival was just a small tent in a big field. The Beatles Convention was just a bunch of stalls selling overpriced stuff. The Beatles video show was just a big telly in a lounge which really everyone has at home. The Matthew Street Festival was cancelled. The Beatles bands were overrated and played in packed pubs which aren’t children friendly. The hotel was a filthy and disgusting health hazard and the staff were rude and argumentative. And the Tour company were disorganized and unhelpful. We spent a fortune on tickets for all the events and were refused entry by heavy bouncers because we had kids and the venues were all licensed. Then we were refused a refund on unused tickets. The kids were bored, we all hated it and others were also complaining. European Capital of Culture? Pissed people pissing in the streets, shagging in the alleys and dealing hardcore drugs. And that was just the staff. More like the Scouse Capital of Horror.
