Memories of Mark
On the eve of the anniversary of Marc Bolan’s death, family, friends and famous fans spoke to Terry Staunton
In the 30 years since his premature death, the Marc Bolan story has been told and retold time and again. It’s a tale we shouldn’t tire of, as it has helped future generations discover the glorious music of one of the world’s most exciting and individual rock stars. Tony Visconti, the producer of T.Rex’s biggest hits, goes as far as to say that almost every British band who has emerged since that sad day in September 1977 owes a debt of gratitude to Bolan, and who would argue with that?
The spirit of Marc Bolan lives on in countless young pretenders, seduced by the glamour, the showmanship and the songs of an extraordinary artist. His own music continues to live and breathe to this day, and will be celebrated at a special anniversary concert at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 15 September, where pals and pop stars will gather to perform their own favourites. These particular children of the revolution include Marc Almond, Linda Lewis, Ruby Turner, Shakin’ Stevens, Mungo Jerry’s Ray Dorset, Dr Robert, Andy Ellison of John’s Children, Marc’s son Rolan, Danielz of the world’s premier Bolan tribute act, T.Rextasy, and a house band featuring Visconti and Blondie drummer Clem Burke.
