Ade Edmondson of Bad News fame is back with a new band, The Bad Shepherds. By Tim Jones

Like most people who have instruments at home, you pick it up and play acoustic versions of songs you like and before Christmas 2007 I had a drunken lunch in Soho and went to Denmark Street and bought a mandolin, and it took off from there. I was working with the Bonzos and I mentioned this to Bob [Carruthers, their manager] and all the doors opened easily. Maartin [Alcock] and Troy [Donockley] were on the same wavelength as me, and I knew Troy from seeing him on YouTube with Nightwish. And the first thing he said when he came in was, ‘can we do The Model’ [by Kraftwerk]? And we do now. We had a list of about 150 tunes but we needed a focus so it’s punk/new wave.

Will your performances be punk?

It’ll be punk and folk-poke. It’ll be noisy and exciting, like holding onto a bus as it’s driving away [laughs]. And we have no drums – say no to drums! We’ve rehearsed in Birmingham and we’ll do a ive recording when we’re good. Maybe we’ll get into Tears For Fears land this year, though in my youth it was Free, Queen, The Who and Fairport. But punk was the background and inspired us to just do it in comedy then. You don’t need to be like Bernard Manning [laughs].
