Once more, William Shatner boldly goes… into a recording studio. Greg Prato sets his microphone to ‘stun’.
Whenever a new William Shatner recording appears from a galaxy far, far away, Trekkies and fans of anything-but-ordinary music start to rejoice. The former captain of the USS Enterprise recently took the time out – well, more like nine minutes – to look back on his past and present musical cosmic voyages. Prepare for light speed…
“What’s your expectation? Shall I start talking?” Out of the jillions of phone interviews I had conducted over the years, I found myself momentarily baffled at such a straightforward – yet unexpected question. However, this question was not coming from just any run-of-the-mill interviewee. No, this was coming from the incomparable Mr William Shatner.
A modern day renaissance man if you will, Shatner will forever be best known as Captain James T Kirk of Star Trek fame. But, in the ensuing years, Shatner (or, as his assistant refers to him, Bill) has stuck his fingers in as many pies as possible. Author, actor, TV commercial pitchman and even singer. In fact, his cult classic album, The Transformed Man, continues to pick up fans to this day, due to Shatner’s dramatised vocal delivery, now deemed by many as being comedy genius.
Getting back to the initial question that Shatner put to me; what exactly was my expectation with this interview? …
