SOUL SURVIVORS
DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES talk to Ken Sharp
Architects of consummately crafted rock and soul, Daryl Hall and John Oates are the best selling duo of all time. Since meeting up in the late Sixties, while escaping from a riot taking place at Philly’s Adelphi Ballroom during a ‘Battle Of The Bands’ show, Daryl and John have gone on to become one of the great musical forces, fashioning an extraordinary body of work. Their songs include such jewels as She’s Gone, Sara Smile, Rich Girl, Camelia, It’s A Laugh, Wait For Me, Kiss On My List, You Make My Dreams Come True, Maneater, I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do), One On One, Out of Touch, Say It Isn’t So and Do It For Love.
Taking a self-imposed break in the mid-80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates have reemerged stronger and more focused and have won plaudits from many of today’s bands, from Maroon 5 to Gym Class Heroes (guests on the group’s forthcoming album) who cite the band for their prodigious influence. They recently joined such luminaries as Brian Wilson, the Bee Gees, The Kinks’ Ray Davies, Paul Simon, James Brown, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Dolly Parton by being inducted as ‘Icons’ by BMI, America’s performing rights organization, for their contribution to popular music.
