Gone Fishing

The ex-Marillion singer is as busy as ever, revisiting his past and mapping out his future. Interview by Tim Jones

Fish’s latest offering, the 32-song 2-CD Bouillabaisse best-of (Snapper), provides a fine snapshot of his post-Marillion career, as well as chipping in a few mementos of his band days. RC asked him if he’d had a hand in its tracklisting.

“Yeah. I put it together. It was nightmare! I went to guys who run the website and said, ‘you’re the ones who know the material, you come up with a list of favourites as well’. So they did and, other one or two tracks, they were the same. There were a couple I was really torn about like State Of Mind from the Vigil album. The Rock disc was the hardest one to do, ’cos the tracks were lengthy and that makes it more difficult. The Ballads one was easier ’cos there were already a few singles you had to have and so you’ve got more space to play with.

Is there anything left in the vaults?

Not really. They’ve been cleared out. But we’ve got a DVD coming of a show from mid-November in Holland, doing the whole of Misplaced Childhood. . . I think the album’s gained weight over time, ’cos when I was first singing, it was very high. I was straining, an unnatural voice, really pushed. But since then, it’s become a bit more natural, sea-breezy 47 year old kind of voice and that lends itself to that kind of material. And …
