Greg Lake takes to the road this month. Tim Jones asked him about his latest projects.

You’ve got a new band?

Yes. Some of them were the house band at Live 8 – David Arch, for instance, who was the keyboard player on Star Wars and the Harry Potter films. They’re all great players, who mainly do film and studio work. We’ll be doing a mix of solo and past work, including songs from ELP and King Crimson records that people won’t have heard live before.

We’ll record a DVD of the tour, and then a new studio album. We’ve been doing some writing, but it’s still at the early stages. But it’s gonna be serious hammer – I kid you not! This band sounds great – people feel the time properly and have a musicality that is both powerful and colourful. We’re going to do a week of pre-production at Shepperton and then hit the road.

Is there anything unreleased in your solo archive?

Not really. I was never one to make ‘solo’ albums – I never had the need to do my own work, and I don’t hunger for it. Music for me is a joyful experience and my whole life has been with a band. That makes me feel comfortable. We all write and I’ve got a studio in my house with Pro-Tools. I record on that, but when it comes to working music out as a combined unit, it always changes things. People start to get inspired and things …
