The Uk's Most Collectable Progressive Rock Records

Progressive rock may have become a dirty word to many from the late 70s into the late 90s, but there’s been a post-millennial rehabilitation of prog in both the music press and the wider music-buying public. While punk has been celebrating its 30th anniversary, the genre that many of its mainstays most cherished was prog. And while no punk band achieved a No 1 album in punk’s Year Zero of 1977, prog continued to top the charts with the likes of Yes and Genesis.

Today, long-suffering prog collectors can feel satisfied that the classic recordings that first began to emerge at the end of the 60s have retained their value and, in the case of some vintage releases by obscurer acts, hit four figures. While there’s nothing to match Sex Pistols’ infamous God Save The Queen A&M 7”, today prog is as hip as it’s been in over 30 years, bolstering the value of collectables. Even the oncehostile NME trumpets bands from the alt.prog scene who took on the mantle of progressive rock music, such as Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Sigur Rós, Muse, The Polyphonic Spree and Mystery Jets.

As a result, we’re picking up the thread from RC 115, back in March 1989, which stated that a feature on prog was “the first of an occasional series”, and presenting Part Two!
